We remember Alan Kiese

It is with deep sadness, we regret to inform you of the recent passing of Alan Kies, Formerly of Pierce County.

Alan was a friend to many, a trusted colleague, a highly respected advocate for public fleet management, a willing mentor for public fleet managers, and a longtime PFMA Officer.  He was an integral part of the career growth to so many pacific northwest public fleet professionals.

A gentle giant of a man, gone too way soon!

On Wednesday July 15^th, while riding his motorcycle back to see his family in Iowa, Alan died in a horrific motorcycle accident in Montana. His wife stated ”He died doing what he loved- riding his motorcycle on the way to see his family.”

Alan had a passion for everything he did and everyone he met.

Until his retirement in 2019, he had been an officer in the Public Fleet Managers’ Association (PFMA) since 1998. Alan’s vision for PFMA and how we interact with each other remains intact and is repeated by its current officers and members to assist other public fleet managers in their career growth. In a world that now often looks for and reacts to drama, let us reflect on how Alan would calmly interact with others and always had a smile on his face.

We have received permission from Al's wife to share this sad news with former colleagues and friends and inform them of a memorial service celebrating his life. The memorial service will be held on September 26, 2026, at Peace Lutheran Church, 2106 S Cushman, at 10:30 am in Tacoma, WA.
